Idling in Shattrath on my shiny new Albino Drake, I get a lot of people asking where it came from (the intended outcome!) as well as a lot of guildies racing to try to get one for themselves. I spent a lot of time pre-patch compiling a list of all the mounts that I had access to, and then set about buying, grinding, pvping, and otherwise working towards my 50 total. The list of mounts available in the game is quite long, and since not everyone can ride every mount, the numbers available to each person can vary by quite a lot. It can be quite confusing to work out which mounts you have access to, and which ones you're still missing.
So I thought I would share this information, in case people are still chasing their 50 mounts and need to know what their options are. For general info on mounts, visit the official WoW site - it will tell you where to buy your faction's mounts, for example, which I haven't outlined here.
Steps to collect 50 mounts for Leading the Cavalry

1. Buy your own faction's mounts (including the level 30 versions)
2. Buy mounts from the other races of your faction
3. Buy normal flying mounts and epic flying mounts
4. Grind Netherwing and Sha'tari Skyguard rep for drakes and rays
5. Grind Mag'har/Kurenai rep for Talbuks
6. Grind rep with Cenarion Expedition for the Hippogryph (1600g)
7. PvP - battlegrounds, Halaa
8. If you're still short - try some of the extras listed below.
Breakdown of the PvP mounts included in the amounts above:

So basically, unless you're a Tauren, you have the ability to buy, grind, or PvP your way to 50 mounts. You'll need to work towards them - through rep grinds, a lot of PvP, and earning some money (5000g for epic riding skill, the gold required for the vendor mounts, and the 1600g Hippogryph), but these are basically the "easiest" mounts to acquire without having to deal with RNG in instances and raids. NOTE: You can buy all 6 Netherwing Drakes; the first comes after you complete the final quest, but the other 5 can be purchased back on Netherwing Ledge from Drake Dealer Hurlunk.
If you still don't have enough, here are some extra options:

Once we hit Northrend there will be plenty more mounts injected into the game, and this guide is more to help people get their achievement straight away, without having to wait for the expansion. Here are some of the Northrend mount options.

Finally, only mounts that go into your mount tab count towards the achievements. Temporary mounts such as broomsticks do not count. Class summoned mounts (warlock/pally/DK) do count, as far as I am aware.
Happy collecting! ![]()

I have a question regarding this grind and Tauren. My main is a level 70 Tauren Druid. If I can't ride a specific mount (like the Blood Elf Hawkstrider) but still purchase the mount if I am Exalted with the faction will that mount count, or no? Does it only count if I can physically ride the mount, or does it count if I purchase the mount?
It only counts if you can "learn" the mount and put it into your mount tab, unfortunately :(
Same with pets - the Bloodsail Parrot and the coyote don't actually count as pets for the achievements because they come from items, they don't actually get "learned".
Sorry :(
Ah, alright. Thanks for getting back to me! Perhaps I'll let my Blood Elf Warlock alt go for this achievement instead. Been considering letting her be my Achievement grinder anyway.
The only one I -really- care about for my Druid is the Chef title :)
Thanks again!
This is a great guide. I really haven't planed on grinding this but your guide makes me realize I shouldn't be too far off.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
Most people don't realise how many mounts are available very easily, plus some that are available through some basic (although a little tedious) grinds.
By laying it out this way, it makes it easier to see all of your basic options, then you can worry about special mounts if you need to.
:)
I have to wait till Wrath comes out .... cause I'm a Tauren with unlucky RNG drops *sniff
Hey! Thank you very much for this great guide! You're Google-Ranking is at #1 if you search for "how to get 5 0 mounts before wotlk" xD
I was wondering how many dailies the Sha'tari Skyguard offered? I heard that there were a couple quests at Ogri'la, but I can't seem to acquire them. Also, how did you grind out Sha'tari rep? Did you do the dailies/farm dusts? Thanks!
Hi Brian,
Like a lot of factions, the extra Sha'tari quests open up as you increase your reputation. A lot of factions give you a couple of (usually not very fun!) quests to begin with, then when you reach friendly/honored/revered they will open up new quests for you to do.
Regarding how I did the grind - I used to do dailies every day, so I have long been exalted with the ogres and the Skyguard. The only factions I had to grind were Netherwing (because I had never started them) and Mag'har (because I stopped at Revered previously).
Along with doing the Skettis and Ogri'la dailies, killing mobs in Skettis will give you a small amount of rep, but I'm not sure if/when they stop doing that.
Hope this helps :)
:D
Thanks for the reply, I'm now looking forward to the long and arduous grind towards Exalted. Too bad in a couple of days I will be too focused on leveling :(.
Anywho, your blog is full of win. Makes me wanna roll a druid (which is the only class I have yet to get to a decently high level). Maybe I'll get to it after getting my rogue to 80/rolling a DK.
Keep up the great work!
good post :)
